In the creative and social processes, there often occurs  a transformative breaking point. The participants are confronted with something new and unfamiliar that forces the re-evaluation of the familiar order. This occurrence is disorienting, and it often causes the participants to fall back on familiar patterns. Yet, if examined closely, this ambiguous space also provides possibilities for reinvention and offers emancipatory potential. The symbolic, transitory occurrence described here is called the liminal.
